Supperbar: A Stylish New Take on the Neighbourhood Wine Bar

The new place from the owners of Supperlardo is something truly special – exactly the kind of neighbourhood bar Warsaw has been missing. Stylish, unlike anything else in the city, and somehow instantly feels like your own local. On top of that, it offers a wide selection of interesting, affordable wines and craft hot dogs.

White tiles and rough, unfinished plaster, white tablecloths and candles, dark wood behind the bar and a metal staircase leading up to the mezzanine – from the very first moment, the place feels effortlessly stylish while keeping a wonderfully rough-around-the-edges charm.

The credit for all this beauty goes to Metraż – the studio behind Włoski Strajk Italian Sharing and Kraków's Bufet – it's hard to imagine a better fit for Żoliborz.

Supperbar sits somewhere between street food and casual dining, while focusing on interesting yet affordable wines and beer. Just as importantly, it is built around respect – both for the products it serves and for its guests.

Instead of a simple welcome, you're greeted with a complimentary bite of Warsaw melon with lime zest and Austrian ham. Instead of being handed a menu, you're given a proper introduction to the concept, including the idea behind «69 bottles of wine for less than €69» and a presentation of the house hot dogs.

Which, by the way, are absolutely fantastic.

There are Italian-inspired versions, as well as a street-cart-style hot dog with caramelised onions and sauerkraut, but my choice quite naturally fell on the classic (24 PLN). A potato brioche baked at Supperlardo, an excellent sausage brought in from Austria, pickles, mustard and a house-made relish – an absolute must, especially with a glass of sparkling wine.

The Käsekrainer sausage (20 PLN) with pieces of Maasdam cheese, freshly grated horseradish and sweet mustard, on the other hand, is the perfect match for a beer – something no neighbourhood bar should be without. 

If you're looking for something in between, there are also sliders with cheddar and ham (28 PLN) on house-made buns or, if you've had enough carbohydrates, a salad (25 PLN) with cheddar, two kinds of onion, oregano vinaigrette, peppers and excellent summer tomatoes.

The only thing that felt slightly questionable to me was the disposable cutlery. It certainly has its place in a street food setting, but here it feels a little out of place, especially alongside Zalto glassware.

Everything else, however, is exactly what I'd call a benchmark neighbourhood wine bar. And I'm clearly not the only one who thinks so: just an hour and a half after opening, Supperbar was already packed with happy people enjoying glasses of wine and the best hot dogs in the neighbourhood.
